This Is Why....

This is why I stopped reading books.
Somebody else said it so much better and said it about music.

"i have said before that maybe i should not be allowed to listen to music. it splits my skin and makes me feel so exposed."

Okay...maybe you needed to read the rest of her paragraph to put it in context.
But that is the reason I don't read books.

You'll never know unless it shakes you.
Do you shake?

I prefer to read things that are pure escapism. Like romance novels. I'll throw in the occasional cerebral tome, but all-in-all, reading is for enjoyment, not plucking my pain chords like a harp. It's why I won't watch sad movies - Terms of Endearment made me make that rule. I hate crying at movies, commercials are bad enough and they're only 60 seconds, what's a whole 2 hours of that crap going to do to me?!

No no, read for fun. Read for joy, and always read something with a Happily Ever After.

"The Hermit" by Eugene Ionesco, along with "Nausea" by Jean Paul Sarte nearly killed me when I was 21. I know of a group of graduate students who committed suicide after doing thesis papers on Samuel Beckett; one of them was married to a friend of mine.

"Tropic of Cancer" and "On the Road" changed my life, and my songs wouldn't be what they are without Truman Capote and Flannery O'Connor.

It's scary and dangerous to see inside someone else's brain, someone else's nightmares. Perhaps that is why most of the books that have enriched my life so profoundly have been banned at one time or another.
